FOTODOK presents the acclaimed Gomorrah Girl by Valerio Spada
Gomorrah Girl is a multi-layered project by Italian photographer Valerio Spada about girls who grow up too quickly in a world dominated by the ‘street rules’ of the Camorra, the Neapolitan mafia. The death of the young Annalisa Durante during a mafia shoot-out is the starting point for the story about adolescents in this complicated city. At the same time, it is also a tribute to their resilience and beauty. Spada alternates his penetrating portraits and urban landscapes with images he took of the official police investigation into Annalisa’s death.
Together with designer Sybren Kuiper (-SYB-) he developed this double approach into a compelling publication, which forms a book within a book. Gomorrah Girl was recently awarded first prize in the Photography Book Now competition – sponsored by Blurb – worth $25,000.
FOTODOK presents Gomorrah Girl in Flatland Gallery. Spada will attend the opening and talk about the realisation of his project.
